mapping elsewhere is an artist book containing text, illustrations, and hand-coloured fragments unique to each copy. The text takes the form of a fragmented essay, where family, memories, and other experiences give way to reflections on the place of the personal within larger structures. The text begins with a walk around the artist's neighbourhood in Winnipeg, Manitoba. During this walk, the artist's memories of Mexico are triggered as they cross paths with green space made private and Tyndall stone landmarks. Social and natural histories of stones in architecture in Mexico and in Canada contrast in mapping elsewhere among reflections of a slow and informal learning of narratives marginalized by colonialism. Topics of identity, place-making, and power intertwine in this intimate processing of self.
